The 2-2-5-5 schedule

In a 2-2-5-5 schedule each parent has the same two weeknights every week and the weekends alternate. One parent always has Monday and Tuesday nights, the other always has Wednesday and Thursday nights, and the weekend joins on to each in turn, which is what makes the five-night stretches.

Also called 5-5-2-2, 5-2-2-5.

How the 2-2-5-5 schedule works, night by night

  • Week 1, Wednesday and Thursday nights: Parent A, 2 nights
  • Week 1, Friday night to Tuesday night: Parent B, 5 nights
  • Week 2, Wednesday night to Sunday night: Parent A, 5 nights
  • Week 2, Monday and Tuesday nights: Parent B, 2 nights

Then the two weeks repeat.

Advantages

  • The weeknights never move, so weekly activities and work shifts can be planned around one fixed week.
  • The weekends alternate.
  • An even 50/50 split with four handovers every two weeks.

Drawbacks

  • Five nights in a row away from each parent, every other week.
  • A Monday holiday always falls with the parent who has Mondays, so those holidays usually need their own rule.
  • Both homes need to manage school runs, so it works best when they are fairly close.

Who the 2-2-5-5 schedule suits

Families with fixed weekly commitments. One home always has Monday and Tuesday, the other always has Wednesday and Thursday, so a Tuesday club or a Thursday appointment lands on the same parent every week. Only the weekends move.

Common variations

5-5-2-2 and 5-2-2-5 are the same rotation read from a different starting day. Some families swap which weeknights are fixed to fit work, so one parent has Tuesday and Wednesday instead.

Questions about the 2-2-5-5 schedule

Is 2-2-5-5 the same as 5-2-2-5?

Yes. 2-2-5-5, 5-5-2-2 and 5-2-2-5 all describe the same rotation, counted from a different day. What matters is which parent has which fixed weeknights, and whose weekend comes first.

Why does a 2-2-5-5 schedule start on a Wednesday?

Because the pattern only alternates the weekends when it is counted from Wednesday. Started on a Friday, the same digits give one parent every weekend, which is a different arrangement from the one the name describes.

Is 2-2-5-5 good for young children?

It can be, though five nights is a long gap for a toddler. Families with very young children often start with 2-2-3, which has no gap longer than three nights, and move to 2-2-5-5 when fixed weekdays start to matter more.

Both parents see the same calendar, each day colored by whose it is, and a single day can be swapped without touching the pattern.
