Parenting schedules
What the common parenting rotations actually mean.
Four patterns cover most shared arrangements. Here is what each one gives each parent, and the day of the week it changes over on, which is the part most explanations leave out.
What is a week on / week off parenting schedule?
Seven nights at each home, alternating. Handover is usually Friday after school. Over a two-week cycle it gives an even 7 nights each. The cycle starts on the handover day, which for this rotation is Friday.
Two weeks, starting on the handover Friday. 7 nights 7 nights
Who it suits. Older children, and parents who live far enough apart that a midweek changeover is a burden. The trade is the longest stretch away from each parent of any common schedule, which is why it suits younger children least.
What is a 2-2-3 parenting schedule?
A long weekend, then two nights each, swapping every week. Handover is Friday after school. Over a two-week cycle it gives an even 7 nights each. The cycle starts on the handover day, which for this rotation is Friday.
Two weeks, starting on the handover Friday. 7 nights 7 nights
Who it suits. Younger children, who do better with no long gap: nobody is away from either parent for more than three nights. It asks for the most handovers of the four, so it works best when both homes are close together.
What is a 2-2-5-5 parenting schedule?
The same two weekdays at each home every week, with the weekends alternating. Handover is Wednesday after school. Over a two-week cycle it gives an even 7 nights each. The cycle starts on the handover day, which for this rotation is Wednesday.
Two weeks, starting on the handover Wednesday. 7 nights 7 nights
Who it suits. Families with fixed weekly commitments. One home always has Monday and Tuesday, the other always has Wednesday and Thursday, so a Tuesday club or a Thursday appointment lands on the same parent every week. Only the weekends move.
What is a every other weekend parenting schedule?
One home has every school night; Friday and Saturday alternate. Back for school on Sunday. Over a two-week cycle it gives 12 nights to one home and 2 to the other. The cycle starts on the handover day, which for this rotation is Friday.
Two weeks, starting on the handover Friday. 12 nights 2 nights
Who it suits. Arrangements where one parent lives too far away to manage the school run. Two nights rather than three is deliberate: the children go back on Sunday so they are home for Monday morning, which is the reason the shape exists.
Other questions
Which parenting schedule is best?
There is no best one. The three things that decide it are how far apart the two homes are, how old the children are, and what each parent's week actually looks like. A rotation that needs a changeover every two days is unworkable across a long drive, and the longest gaps suit older children better than young ones.
Is a parenting schedule the same as a custody schedule?
Yes. They are the same thing under two names. Coparia says parenting schedule because plenty of co-parents were never married, and custody is a courtroom word for what is, most days, just whose house the children sleep at. If a court order sets out your arrangement, that order governs whatever any app displays.
Why does the handover day matter?
Because the pattern starts on it. A two-week rotation run from the wrong day of the week is a different arrangement from the one its name describes. 2-2-5-5 started on a Wednesday alternates the weekends, which is the point of it. The same pattern started on a Friday hands one home every single weekend.
How are holidays usually divided?
Most families alternate them by year, so whoever has Thanksgiving this year does not have it next year. That works better than fixing them permanently, because it does not require anyone to remember whose turn it was. Holidays that move, like Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, need a rule rather than a date, or they have to be re-entered every year.
Can a parenting schedule be changed later?
Yes, and it should be able to change without rewriting history. A revision should start from a date forward and leave the past as it was recorded, so a calendar from six months ago still shows what actually happened rather than what the current arrangement would imply.
Setting one up
Coparia builds all four of these, or a custom cycle of any length, and shows you the fortnight before you save it. The pattern above is the one the software runs.
